Visitor Guide to
Borobudur Temple
Borobudur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest Buddhist monument. Visiting well-prepared makes the difference between a rushed tourist experience and something genuinely transformative. This guide covers everything you need to know.
At a glance
This guide covers everything international visitors need to plan a trip to Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Indonesia. All visitors now meet at the Borobudur Museum & Art Village (not the main gate). Operational hours are 08:00–16:00 WIB, the Temple Structure climb is divided into 8 daily 90-minute sessions, sunrise is capped at 100 guests per day, and personal photography is welcome. Official tickets are non-refundable once issued.
Getting There
Borobudur is located in Magelang Regency, Central Java — approximately 40km northwest of Yogyakarta and 86km from Solo. The most common base is Yogyakarta.
Private car or driver: 45–60 min. Public shuttle (Sinar Jaya): departs from Jombor terminal, IDR 20,000 each way, 90 min. Taxi/Grab: 45–60 min, approximately IDR 150,000–200,000.
Private car or driver: approximately 90 minutes via Yogyakarta. Most visitors combine Borobudur with a Yogyakarta stay given the distance.
If staying in Yogyakarta, depart by 3:00 AM. The drive takes 90 minutes. Staying overnight in Borobudur village is strongly recommended — it removes all timing stress.
As of 2025, car parking has moved to a new area northwest of the complex. Allow extra time. Motorbike parking remains available near the entrance.
Opening Hours
- Temple Grounds — open daily 06:30 to 17:30 (last entry 16:30)
- Temple Structure (climbing) — open daily 08:30 to 15:30, eight sessions per day
- Sunrise Experience — temple access from 04:30 via the Borobudur Museum & Art Village, every day including Mondays
- Sunset Experience — late-afternoon access via the Borobudur Museum & Art Village, every day
- Museums — open during temple grounds hours
Sessions 1–3 (08:30–11:30) for the temple structure are most popular — great light, cooler temperatures. Sessions 7–8 (14:30–15:30) are quieter and benefit from softer afternoon light. Sunrise is the premium experience — you have the upper terraces almost entirely to yourself.
Tickets & Booking
All tickets must be booked in advance online — particularly for Temple Structure and Sunrise/Sunset experiences. Walk-up tickets at the gate are limited and often unavailable, especially during peak season (June–August, December).
- Sunrise Experience — limited to 100 guests per day, sells out weeks ahead in peak season
- Sunset Experience — limited to 100 guests per day
- Temple Structure — divided into 8 daily 90-minute sessions running 08:30 to 15:30
You don't need to provide passport details at the time of booking — just the name the ticket should be issued in. Staff at the entry gate may ask to see photo ID (passport for foreign visitors) to verify that the name on your ticket matches, so bring it with you on the day of your visit.
What to Wear
The temple is a sacred site. Dress respectfully — shoulders and knees covered. Sarongs are available at the entrance if needed. Upanat sandals (special temple footwear) are provided for the temple structure climb and must be worn inside — bring toe socks if you're prone to blisters.
- Light, breathable clothing — it can be very hot by mid-morning
- Comfortable walking shoes for the grounds
- Toe socks recommended for the Upanat sandals
- Sunhat and sunscreen for daytime visits
- Warm layer for sunrise — 4:00 AM at altitude can be cool
Practical Tips
- No food or drink inside the temple structure — water is not permitted during the climb
- Allow at least 2 hours for the temple structure; 3–4 hours if exploring the grounds and museums
- The Karmawibhangga and Samudraraksa museums are included with grounds tickets and are excellent
- A free Wira Wiri shuttle runs between the entrance and the temple area
- Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs are available at the visitor centre
- There is no guarantee of sunrise visibility — refunds are not given for cloud cover
- Children under 3 enter free. Children 3–10 receive a 50% discount on grounds tickets (not sunrise)
